Your Questions Answered

This post was published by Alex Ortner

I took some time to sit down and answer a few of the questions that were asked in Sunday’s post.  A lot of the questions were about Diabetes and so I’m going to work on getting Dr. Cousens on the phone this week and if not next week to answer those questions.

We also had a lot of questions from yesterday’s post!  I’ll work to get those answered in the coming days as well.  I may have a special guest stopping by my house tomorrow and I’ll see if I can get him to answer some of the questions as well.  He’s somebody who has been one of my teachers for years and I know you’ll recognize him.  :)

Until then, here are some of your questions answered from Sunday’s post.  I was going to post this yesterday but thought it was too many videos for one day.  I didn’t want to overload you! So when I refer to the “video above” I’m referring to the video from yesterday’s post.  :)

If you have additional questions on any raw food and health topic please feel free to ask them below.  Hopefully I’ll get this expert to answer all the questions for you!  :)

  1. I really enjoyed the video it gave me real hope. Where do you go for more actual information to actually apply it to your life. What were they eating, how much, at what times. Did they eat the same foods or were there special diets for each one? We need some way to apply it in our own lives. Where do we go from here?

  2. Another great video. Thanks for the Q&A and the continued encouragement.

I picked up your video and bonuses two days ago and look forward to learning more about the raw food lifestyle.

As a mother of 5, and a Pregnancy Consultant, I encourage juicing and eating more raw foods as a way of quickly increasing health, vitality and fertility.

I look forward to learning more. Thanks!

  3. Alex: I enjoy your regular clips and information on the site. Perhaps you could also let your readers know about the program of board certification from the American Naturopathic Medical Association and also the fine program of the Certified Natural Health Professionals and their fine seminars on natural health. This could possibly allow your readers to contact those who are ND’s and/or CNHP’s to assist them professionally.
As you well know this is a growing field and can use all the help we can get, both on a informational front and legislative front, both state and federal.

How about a session on homeopathy? An excellent source could be Washington Homeopathic from Berkley Springs, WV. I know them personally and they are excellent people who are passionate about Homeopathic medicine.

Another interesting topic would be muscle testing and Jin Shin Do. These are all programs provided by CNHP.org

Thanks for getting the work out on Diabetes. I am a type two diabetic and with the raw diet my numbers are coming down.

I will be 70 in December so for exercise I use the Total Gym (I found one used for $25). I tried the P90X program but it was a bit too intense. I also teach Aikido twice a week http://www.pangainoonaikido.com Maybe I should host a webnar on how to fall, since this is the third major cause of death and one of the major causes of serious injury.

    Regards, John

  4. Great video Alex. If you don’t mind I can help the lady w/the kid/veggie problem. Get yourself a good blender and add some veggies to a smoothie. Just a small amount of spinach in a fruit smoothie is not noticeable and tastes great. If you eat meat, add veggies in a hamburger or meatloaf by blending them first then pulsing in the meat. We own a Ninja and it works great but if your budget allows a Healthmaster or Vitamix is awesome too.

To the lady who’s looking for alternative health doctors can try naturalcures.com (membership site) or Dr. Mark Hyman’s Ultrametabolism site. Both have lists of or referrals to doctors that will send you to your pantry first. Of course you could just google alternative health practioner and your city name also.

    Best of luck…CC

  6. When you get Dr. Cousens on the phone, there’s something I really want to know: “Cure” is a strong word that shouldn’t be used lightly, and “reversing diabetes” falls into the same category. Did any of the patients have a glucose tolerance test afterward, with normal non-diabetic results, or are they just keeping their blood sugar controlled without medication by following the low-carb Rainbow Green lifestyle?

  7. How does maca compare with salba? Are they similar in nutrient content?

    Comment by Pamela — April 28, 2010 @ 2:36 pm

  8. Thank you for these videos! Very helpful and educating. I just begun to transition to raw food diet and been living on salads mostly, which is becoming boring. I appreciate all the new information!

  11. Alex,

Thanks so much for your inspiring videos and frequent emails — so down to earth, while at the same time offering something that can make a radical change for the positive in our lives.

I’ve been getting your emails at my new email address, since I recently resigned from a publishing job (at a great company that does alternative health books, among other topics — it is called Inner Traditions). At this point my husband and I own and are running an organic berry farm here in Vermont where we live(SunshineValleyBerryFarm.com). It is a major step in our lives, and it feels energizing, challenging, a bit scary, and happy too — similar to a radical change in diet! Today (April 28th) is a snow day(!!) in our fair town in mid-state Vermont, and so I have a minute away from the rigors of farming to catch up on emails — and saw both yesterday’s and today’s emails.

It is so very inspiring to know that you and others are “out there” living this diet. I do appreciate that you do not present an “all or nothing” approach — there can be shades of grey, even in the approach to raw food diet, and I think that perspective can be very helpful to many folks, who otherwise might be put off by a kind of over-zealous communication.

I am not anywhere near the raw food diet (changing jobs was enough transition to handle for the last couple months), but I am intending that, over this year of 2010, to make strides towards a much more raw and healthy way of being. I am getting plenty of exercise running a farm (pruning, planting, weeding, soon to be picking… on and on) and can testify to the fact that this exercise is already helping so much — the sun, fresh air, deeper breathing, and movement, have all simply and naturally shifted me into feeling so much more … well, just simply happy.

It is true that breakfast seems to be the stumbling point of any healthy regime… I loved your simple blended drinks that you displayed making, and I love the Green Smoothie approach of Victoria Boutenko. I have quite a few books I’ve collected over the last 5 years and have begun, again, to read them and make the Green smoothies. I have a slight sugar sensitivity, and so less fruit is better for me. I just bought Maca recently. It bears saying here from what I have both read and experienced myself (when I did a solid month of Green Smoothies) that those greens, blended, can help women with hormonal issues — either menstrual, or pre-menopausal — This is a whole area of research that can be done over some years…. I’m too busy running a farm, but if I get time, maybe I’ll become a naturopath and pursue this!

Thanks so much for your good energy out into the world — nice that you shared your family life — your lovely wife and sweet son — and your kitchen and office space in yoru new home — with all of us “out here” — it all makes it so much more real, and so it all feels more possible to actually do!

    Thanks again,
    Patricia Rydle

  12. Hi Alex-
Love Raw for 30 Days! I watch it regularly and look forward to more informative documentaries like this one. When you get Dr. Cousens on the phone would you please ask him about how a raw food diet can help with hypothyroidism. My doctor advised me to eat “alot of iodized salt & red meat.” (My cholesterol is 282!!). Is she kidding??
    Thanks!

  13. Hi Alex,

I am not diabetic and I don’t need to lose weight but I am interested in raw foods because of some digestion difficulties.
    .
I do have a question about raw foods. I follow an Ayurvedic Health program and diet which generally recommends eating warm freshly cooked food. They say that there are bacteria in fresh foods that are not good for us that are killed when the food is cooked and also that cooked food is easier to digest and more easily assimilated and is therefor more nourishing and that this offsets the problem of some of the nutrients being lost during the cooking process.

Also, I have a question about using powdered supplements as these seem to be a processed food and not alive and fresh.

Thanks for your perspective on raw foods.

  14. i don’t see where to ask questions, hopefully this gets me there.

I have have always been vegetarian at times and always go back to eating meat and feel my body needs it. if helps keep my blood sugar balanced and it helps me stay grounded and in my body. i feel it helps me be more balanced.
what do you think about the idea that different blood types need different diets? i would rather go vegetarian and mostly raw but it just hasn’t felt right for my body…any insight on that?
    thanks, Cedar

  15. ok, I already buy the 30 day raw.. reversing diabetes DVD. My son is type 1 diabetic….so, I think he needs to eat raw fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouts, nuts.. and what else? to reverse his diabetic state. He is in Mexico, I need to tell him what else he needs to do. Thank you!

  16. I drink kombucha tea and wonder if you know much about it and how the raw foods fits with this health tonic? Also is the sugar content very high once the tea has fermented? I have some fears about going raw foods but I have ordered the video. In the past I was a vegan for numerous years, but that was over 14 years ago. I have wanted to return to a vegetarian diet but my husband is not willing to give up meat. Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your time

  17. Hi Alex…
I am indeed a diabetic, for the moment. I have been trying to get my blood sugar down for years. I just started on insulin. My sugars have been between 200ish to 400ish no matter what I do. I will be ordering the DVD set very soon.

Thanks so much for your work!!!

  18. Thanks Alex,

I know from my own experience that there is more than just a little hope. After ten years as type 2 I have been medication free. Part of the result come from a diet that includes a large portion of raw food.

  19. Hello Alex
what can you tell me about cruciferous vegetables blocking the absorption of iodine?
I ask because i recently had an allergy/deficiency test and found that i am allergic to tomatoes(i’ve always loved them) and am deficient in iodine. I chose the lady who did the test because she is also a raw food coach and I thought at least i wouldn’t have to listen to the standard nutritional mumbo jumbo advice. I was shocked though when she told me I was eating too much kale, broccoli and spinach!because these block the absorbtion of iodine I juice one of these with other things every morning as well as eating them whole. I won’t go into a long history of my raw food journey, but thinking back my weight loss did stop and then reverse when I got a juicer!
I’ve temporarily stopped juicing these vegetables and started taking kelp again.
    do you have aby advice?
    thank you

  21. HI Alex, Last night with David Wolfe was FANTASTIC!!! My husband and I had so much energy from the whole event! It was great meeting you and you said to email you with any questions for David.
My husband and I were wondering what David ate specifically on any given day. Today I received an email from Tera Warner showing a photo of what’s in her fridge. So what’s in David’s fridge?

Also, David spoke last night about reversing male patterned baldness with the gel form the cacao bean. Does this come prepared or do you have to prepare it home and does it work for women?

    Keep being great!
    Deanna

    Keep up the great work!

  23. I am a Type II diabetic. I have not been on any type of medication for 5 yrs now.(don’t particularly like doctors) I am currently (for the past 2-3 months) experiencing a little numbness in both feet (the right foot moreso than the left). My question to you is, can the numbness be reversed if I go raw for 30 days. I will probably try it anyway, but I’d like to know.

    best regards,

    Bryan

  26. Hi Alex,
Love your down to earth style and great info! I have lots of questions so hopefully you’ll have time to address 1 or 2…Looking forward to the next video/blog.

Why spring H20? What’s “wrong” with tap?

What’s the dif between Cocoa nibs and beans. I haven’t found beans so I used nibs in one of the smoothy recipes you did with Frank Giglio is that ok? And just how good for you are the nibs/beans – I could eat them daily but somehow I don’t think that would be healthy?

I live in an apt in MI – so local & organic are only available 2-4 mths out of the year. I know I can freeze berries, what are some other veggies, fruits and herbs that I might buy while they are available and freeze for the winter?

I am not diabetic – I usually do a smoothy with 2-4 pieces or fruit & almost as many greens – is this ok or still too much fruit?
